5-year-old Alexa Hernandez was playing hide and seek with her siblings and friends in the courtyard of the Garden Apartments in Azusa. The petite brown haired girl was hiding behind the trash bin on the perimeter of the parking lot.
A short, stocky man grabbed her by the hair and threw her to the ground. She fought back and almost got away but he held on by grabbing her shirt. Meantime, the children were screaming at the man, loud enough to bring Alexa 's mom running. "I was running but felt like I'd never get to him. I was thinking please don't take her." All the ruckus may have scared the man who let Alexa go. Kimberly Hernandez wanted to keep going after the man but her neighbor worried he might have a weapon and stopped her. Alexa initially told her mom she wasn't hurt. But as the shock wore off, the little girl admitted her head hurt where her hair was pulled. She was nervous and anxious and jumped at every little noise. She tried to sleep, but worried that a man was at the window. She imagined him punching the window open and then kidnapping her out of her home. A day later she looked happy playing outside, but her mom insisted she come inside. "I don't want them to play outside or at the park unless I'm right there."
Azusa police say so far there are few leads and no suspect. But there is a vague description. Police are looking for a Latino, 5' 4" 150 pounds bald, clean shaven. Call police if you have any information.
