2 of 3 drug dealers captured after fleeing from drug ring case

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -- Authorities have arrested two of three men accused of operating a drug ring, who last month failed to appear in a Detroit courtroom to hear the verdict in their trial, a federal official said Thursday.

Carlos Powell, 39, was captured Wednesday night in the St. Louis, Missouri, area and his brother Eric Powell, 36, was found near Atlanta, Georgia, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Arrest warrants were executed simultaneously and they were taken into custody without incident, the agency said.

Carlos Powell was carrying about $750,000 and a gun, and his brother also had a large amount of cash, the agency said.

"We received a great amount of tips from viewers of the media that might have recognized these guys," said Marshals spokesman Robert C. Watson, who also credited the police work of investigators involved. "Their tips really helped us develop a strategy to apprehend them."

The Powells and Earnest Proge Jr. had been free on bond when they were expected at court May 12. The jury convicted the Powells and Proge of drug conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges in a case involving the trafficking of heroin, cocaine and marijuana. They could face sentences of life in prison.

The Associated Press sent messages seeking comment Thursday to lawyers representing the Powells.

Authorities are still trying to find Proge, Watson said.

Federal prosecutors said the drug ring operated from 2006 to 2010. More than $21 million was seized, along with luxury cars.

The Powells are awaiting extradition to Michigan, the Marshals said, and also could face more charges where they were caught. The Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team, which includes local, state and federal agencies, worked with Marshals' fugitive task forces in Missouri and Georgia to apprehend the brothers.
