3rd Grader Saves Choking Friend

Posted: Updated:

Edina, MN-A Minnesota 3rd grader is being hailed a hero after he performed the Heimlich on a friend who choked on his lunch.

It happened on Tuesday during a school picnic.

Zach, Aiden and Fletcher were enjoying their lunches when all of a sudden they noticed something was wrong with Fletcher.

Aiden ran to get help from teachers, but without even thinking Zach jumped into action.

He began performing the Heimlich on the 9-year-old

Turns out, Fletcher was choking on a piece of his French fries.

"I just couldn't breathe or anything," said Fletcher.

Zach says it was a scary moment.

"Was kind of scared for Fletcher, cuz my friend was in trouble,” said Zach. "I want to be a good friend, and I want to help Fletcher.

Fletcher says he was turning blue and purple during the incident.

"The first thing I said to him was, even if you're not doing it well, at least do it. It's better than nothing," said Zach’s dad, Matt Furman.

Fletcher says he's going to stay away from French fries for now.

As for Zach, he hopes this incident can encourage other kids to learn how to do the Heimlich.
