Only On Fox: Neighbors On Edge After Recent Home Burglaries

Residents in one North Philadelphia neighborhood are fed up with their homes being robbed.

They say too many homes have been burglarized in the past few months. Now, they’re speaking out on their frustration and suspicions about what’s happening in their neighborhood.

They spoke only Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser.

At Warnock Village, residents are now barricading their front doors with children’s toys and chimes to warn them if a burglar is trying to break-in.

All this, after neighbors say burglars have struck 14 times in recent weeks.

“We're living in fear, we're scared, we can't sleep, the kids are barricading the doors with toys,” said resident Tanya Caldwell.

Dozens of residents called Fox 29 to complain about the burglaries, insisting they need more security.

“They need to take care of the people who rent from them. That's what we want done. We want to feel safe,” said resident Frank Green.

The residents say the burglars are getting into their homes using a master key. One neighbor was home when two masked men invaded her home.

“They went to her brother's room and took the TV, the Xboxes, and they left a knife on her son's bed,” said resident Shakina Hunter.

The thieves have stolen electronics and other valuable items.

Neighbors say Philadelphia Housing Authority police patrols have been stepped up and the Philadelphia Public Housing Authority has promised new door locks, but residents say that's not enough.

“They promised us cameras, changing our locks, storm doors, but now everything is being reversed. we don't have the money for this we don't have the money for that,” said Hunter.

Residents Association President Frances Gibbs says someone tried to break into her home Wednesday night.

“They promised me safety, told me my family would be safe here and we're not,” said Gibbs.

Fox 29's calls to PHA officials have not been returned.

Police say four people have been shot. According to authorities, a 3-year-old girl was shot, one time in the left side of her chest. She was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was pronounced dead.
