Lion Pride Makes Debut At Zoo Miami

Posted: Updated:

Miami, Fla.- A new pride of lion cubs made their debut at the Zoo Miami on Thursday.

Momma lioness Kashifa gave birth to the four cubs in March, and has since adopted her sister's orphaned cub, Kwasi.

The addition of the lion babies is an important milestone for the zoo.

"Kashifa's first litter had three babies. Two of those died. The third one got very sick, we had to send to another zoo, so we lost those babies. It was very heartburning for us because it was the first litter born here," said Zoo Miami spokesperson Ron MaGill. "That cub, Kwasi, had already been weaned. His mother had died, he had been weaned. But, Kashifa accepted him, and not only accepted him, but allows him to nurse with her younger, little cubs. So, that was the thing then, to get him out here on exhibit, and that's what we've come to today."

For now, to minimize stress to the animals the new pride won't be on public display every day.
