Announcer Tom Durkin set to call his final Belmont Stakes

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

This year is Tom Durkin's last chance to call a horse racing Triple Crown, because at the end of August he'll hang up his headset and binoculars for good. If you've been to a race at a New York track in the last 24 years, you know this voice.

California Chrome will try to break what's been a 36-year drought at Saturday's Belmont stakes and go for the Triple Crown. The horse has won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Durkin has called his fair share of races with potential Triple Crown winners but is 0-7 in attempting to call the feat.

Durkin says repetition and mnemonics help him remember all those crazy horse names. But even he gets nervous and is known to have a touch of stage fright. If he is worried, the fans never notice.

Durkin says he'll miss it after he retires but he'll be back as a spectator.  After all, he says Belmont is practically like home.  He lives just four minutes away.
