(WJBK) - A sea of pink will fill the seats at Chene Park and will then wind down Jefferson Ave. Here's all you need to know to Race for the Cure.

It's not just a walk or a run, Race for the Cure is an event that touches your emotions, high and low.

The sometime irreverent team names make you smile; the reality of the disease makes you cry.

"Here in metro Detroit we have a high rate of incidence, a higher rate of late-stage diagnosis, that means harder to treat and survive, and a higher rate of mortality. Compared to the nation it's higher; compared to the state, it's significantly higher," says Komen Race for the Cure's Mo Keenan Meldrum.

In its 23rd year, the event has raised millions of dollars for treatment support, education and research in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised stays local.

"We encourage people to register, to donate to fill up that pot of money because you are going to help this community and through research you're going to make a change in the world," says Keenan Meldrum.

Because of the planned, now delayed, construction on Woodward Avenue, Race for the Cure has moved to Chene Park on the riverfront.

We know what your first question is - where do I park?

"There is ample parking around Chene Park. It tends to be a little different than what you're used to when you go to a Tiger's game, smaller lots, but plenty of them," says Keenan Meldrum.
