Minnesota Teen Slept Outside For A Year For Charity

Posted: Updated:

HERMANTOWN, MN- Friday night was the last night a teenager from Hermantown, Minnesota, slept under the stars.

17-year-old Rudy Hummel had already slept outside for one calendar year, including during the coldest winter in Northern Minnesota in almost 140 years.

He spent his nights in a makeshift little house in his backyard, inside a snow cave, and in tents he would pitch if he happened to be away from home.

It all started as a personal challenge.

Then Rudy realized he could raise money for a worthy cause by doing something different.

"I chose Habitat for Humanity because I realized that there are a lot of people who don't have a choice about sleeping outside. They have to do it whether they want to or not," explained Hummel.

Rudy says his unusual sleeping arrangements taught him to never lose faith in humanity.

Rudy has already raised over $5,000.
