Doylestown Native Detained In Honduras

Posted: Updated:
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -

A local woman fears for her son's life. He’s one of six Americans jailed in Central America, accused of smuggling guns.

However, those detainees say, they were targeted because they're Americans.

“We feel neglected. We don't feel the U.S. Embassy has stepped up to the plate,” said Captain Robert Mayne.

Captain Mayne, a Doylestown native, Devon Butler, and four others are living in deplorable conditions inside a Honduran jail, and they haven't met with any U.S. Embassy officials since May 19th.

They’ve had several other visitors, and have access to a cell phone to call friends and family.

Butler's mother says what's happening has her frightened for her son and his friends.

“The unfamiliar judicial system is also unpredictable,” she said.

“I'm terrified. I’m terrified of the prospect of justice in this country,” said Captain Mayne

The men were arrested May 5th, and accused of smuggling guns.

Mayne thinks he knows why, he said, “What we believe happened is that they saw an opportunity. They saw a wealthy boat, Americans and they pounced on us.”

Admittedly there were several weapons on board, two handguns, two shotguns and an M-70-AB-2, which looks a lot like an AK-47.

Mayne says rightfully so because of the pirate infested waters of the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Devon Butler, whose family still lives in our area, is a diver and deckhand of the Aqua Quest.

He's a modern day adventurer.

His brother Justin, along with Devon's mother, wants the crew released immediately.

“I don't even want to think about the worst case scenario. The scenario that I certainly hope will play out is he comes home,” said Justin.

Thousands of miles away, Captain Mayne, constantly thinks of that worst case scenario.

“We're at their mercy to do what's right, and I don't know that they're going to do what's right,” he said.

A Go-Fund-Me site has been set up to help cover the group's legal fees.

So far, it has raised more than $3,600.
