Massive Mound Of Dirt Removed From Under I-495 Bridge

WILMINGTON, Del. -

Progress is being reported in the work to get the Interstate 495 bridge in Delaware reopened to traffic.

Officials say they're almost done removing a massive mound of dirt that's suspected of causing some support columns to tilt under the bridge that spans the Christina River in Wilmington.

They say it's the first step in getting the bridge repaired and reopened to traffic.

But transportation officials caution that process could take weeks, if not months.

Officials plan to give an update on their progress Tuesday afternoon.

The bridge was closed last Monday after the problem was discovered during an emergency inspection.

Traffic has been redirected through Wilmington onto Interstate 95.
