You ask people in Ventura Harbor what stresses them out about California and they say things like "The cost of living is out of control." And, take a look at the top four most stressed-out states...
3. New Jersey
When I asked people what makes them nuts they say things like traffic. Ventura resident Karine Atanesian says there used to be a time that people were gracious out on the roads. They would yield on the roads and say things like "'you go' 'no you go first'" Now, she says, they're not always so nice. Atanesian calls traffic "frustrating and annoying."
The new studies come from Movoto.com which has used Census Bureau info to look at the state's stress level.
That survey and another from The Stress Institute of Atlanta suggest California isn't necessarily the happiest place on earth.
They say California is:
1. 9th worst in numbers of people with long commutes.
2. 5th worst on unemployment
3. 2nd worst on what we pay for housing. A 26 percent share of our income goes toward that.
Some of the big things that stress Californians out is not getting enough work...
1. The average work week is 38 hours.
2. Our population density includes 240 people per square mile.
3. 22% of the population has no health insurance
All of this based on quality of life and financial indicators.
Jay Schmolitz from Virginia, who's here on business, calls California an "extremely stressful state."
Then there's Virgil Evans who moved to Ventura County in 2007.
He finds the area very peaceful "compared to the San Fernando Valley, the West Side. When I asked him what stressed him out about those areas he told me "you could never leave for anything without wondering am I going to be in miles of traffic or will I get to my destination."
Finally, we found a real treasure along the beach. 70-year-old Stuart Sinclair has retired. He loves the view. And, he doesn't feel stess anymore.
He's philosophical when he says "When I first retired it took me a long time to slow down and get out of the fast lane... and, when I started to get close to retirement I decided why don't I let them go by - the other drivers - and I started calming down."
Of course California has a lot of good. We have great weather, picture-perfect marinas and nice beaches. If you get a little stressed out the beaches might be a good place to go.
