Fight the bite: How to have a mosquito free summer

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - A Terminix technical specialist shares tips on how to stay safe and bite free this summer. The world’s largest pest control provider is out with a new environmentally friendly mosquito service for both residential and commercial customers. The service will include the use of a new, patented mosquito control technology.

Water reduction
-Mosquitoes that bite in a person's yard are usually breeding nearby on the property or adjacent properties.
-Regularly empty standing water found in outdoor pots, saucers, barrels and "kiddie pools." Replace birdbath water at least once a week.
- Water from rain gutters should be directed away from the home and not be allowed to accumulate close to the foundation.

Patio time/entertaining
- Avoid times of peak mosquito activity, primarily dusk and dawn, but remember that some mosquitoes, such as the Asian tiger mosquito, bite during the daytime.
- Use floor fans. Cross-winds greater than 5mph can be effective in reducing mosquito bites
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when feasible.
- Opt for light-colored clothing when outdoors for extended periods. Dark clothing has been shown to attract some species of mosquitoes more than lighter colored clothing.

Lighting
- Switch outdoor lighting from mercury vapor lamps to sodium vapor lamps to attract fewer mosquitoes. Mercury vapor lights can be used to light areas and help to lure insects away from the house at night.
- Use a mesh screen on all windows, doors and ventilation openings. Screening will help prevent mosquitoes and other flying insects from entering the home.

Landscaping
- Use soil to fill in low areas in lawns and landscaped sections where rainwater may accumulate and stand for more than seven days, which is all the time a mosquito needs to breed.
- Install an agitator in garden ponds or buy fish that eat mosquito larvae. The wave actions created by an agitator discourage female mosquitoes from laying eggs.
