Warnings In Effect For Severe Thunderstorms, Flooding

Posted: Updated:

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings continue as a slow-moving line of storms moves across our area.

The storms prompted a ground stop at Philadelphia International Airport this afternoon. Travelers are being urged to check their flight status with their airlines.

Philadelphia and most of its suburbs are also under a Flash Flood Watch through late Friday evening. And some communities north and west of the city already have Flood Warnings for small streams due to the rain we picked up overnight and into this morning.

Our half-inch to 2.5 inches of rainfall overnight, depending on where you live, "set the stage for the potential for new flooding," the National Weather Service says.

The threat for new flash flooding is mostly this afternoon and evening for eastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware, while in New Jersey the primary risk is until midnight.

We could be looking at new rainfall totals of up to 2.5 inches, and residual runoff could make flooding linger well past midnight.

"In many areas, it will take only an inch of rain 45 minutes to an hour to produce flooding," the weather service states.

The good news is that, once again, as this storm system clears the coast, we're looking at a tremendous weather weekend for the dads out there.

Saturday looks drier and nice with a high of 80, while Father's Day's expected high is a sunny and warm 84. Both look to be perfect "10s," according to our "Weather by the Numbers."

Monday looks sunny and warm again at 85, and we'll climb to 89 by Tuesday with rising humidity. Wednesday could be our first 90-degree day of 2014, but a chance of thunderstorms creeps back into the forecast.
