Homeless Teen Becomes Valedictorian Of Graduating Class

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, DC-A high school student in Washington D.C. beat the odds and graduated with top honors.

18-year-old Rashema Melson not only received her diploma from Anacostia High School, but she was named valedictorian of her class.

What makes the honor even more special to Melson is that she did it all while her family lived at the D.C. General Homeless Shelter.

Her family has been homeless for 3 years, but she's using her story to encourage her class not to give up.

"I wasn't going to give up. I know myself. You just always have that little moment of doubt. But as soon as you're about to give up, that's when you know you've made it," said Melson.

Her family has been with her every step of the way.

"We motivated her to keep up the good work, and we just wanted her dreams to come true," said sister Desiree Brown.

Next up for Melson, Georgetown University, which she will attend on a full scholarship.
