Family provides "Virtual Graduation" for Dad on Transplant List

Posted: Updated:
It's the biggest day of an 18-year-olds life and the proudest of any parents, High School graduation.

Jim McDermott wasn't able to be there for his son and OCSA grad Zak McDermott's big day at least not physically.  But, through the power of technology his family and friends made it happen.

"Hi dad," Zak yelled to his dad through FaceTime.

For the past 3 months Jim's been hospitalized as he waits for a new heart.  This, after having a massive heart attack while washing the car.

We spoke to Zak about his dad's time in the hospital.

"It's really sad that my dad wasn't there to celebrate with me because he helped me through a lot of those trials," Zak McDermott said.

Jim says he was hoping to be out of the hospital by now.

"I was supposed to be out of the hospital by this date obviously. When it comes to heart transplants you can't dictate what's happening. It's been a real hardship on my family," Jim McDermott said.

"He's a wonderful father, this means so much," Jim's wife Penny said through the phone.

Thanks to FaceTime and a broadcast of the ceremony held at Cottonwood Church, Jim got to see the special moments, including his son playing the bass during the national anthem.

A new heart could come at any moment son Jim says he's staying positive.  A Facebook Page called "Have a Heart for Jim" if you'd like to learn more or make a donation.
