VIDEO: Students Help Teacher In Need of Kidney Transplant

Posted: Updated:

A group of Colorado students, faced with their teacher needed a kidney transplant, came up with a way help him find a donor, and it appears after two years. Their hard work is finally paying off.

On Valentine’s Day Andrew Menard told his 4th grade class his personal D-day was coming.

“It’s time for action its either it’s either time for a transplant or time to get on the dialysis machines,” Menard said.

That was then and this is now.

“Well exciting news someone has stepped forward to help me out so in just a week from if am scheduled for a kidney transplant,” Menard said.

2 years ago, Andrew's class came up with Kids4Kidneys in an effort to find a donor for their teacher.

“Our goal became finding a living donor, “Menard said.

Students began their effort in 2012 with an all school rally and on line video.

“It was really exciting we got a good response from that,” Menard said, but no live donor came forward until this spring.

“This time was a charm,” Menard said.

As a result of a series of stories done on our sister stations Andrew Menards dream of a living donor has come true it’s actually someone he knows it means all the hard work the Kids4Kidneys program put in has paid off in a big way.

“We've shown there certainly is hope... that people will step forward. It’s just a matter of getting the word out,” Mernard said.

With a week to go before surgery, Menard is thankful a friend came forward.

“It’s a very life changing situation and words just can't do it justice,” Mernard said.
