Cockfighting Ring Broken Up In Kensington

Posted: Updated:

The PSPCA busted a major cockfighting ring in Kensington Saturday morning after receiving a tip through their Anti-Cruelty Hotline.

PSPCA officers linked up with Philadelphia Police and responded to the 2900 block of E Street around 3:00 a.m. Saturday.

Police arrived on scene to find a large scale cockfight in progress, leading to participants and spectators to scatter, but not before police could arrest one suspect.

The PSPCA then followed police onto the premises with a search warrant, and removed 18 live roosters and one deceased rooster.

The birds were taken to Erie Avenue shelter for evaluation, but officials say it is difficult to rehabilitate fighting birds, and they are likely to be humanely euthanized.

"Cockfighting is a brutal crime and is still serious problem in our community," said Director of Humane Law Enforcement George Bengal. "It's a felony in Pennsylvania and we will hold those who harmed these birds responsible."
