Undocumented Student Overcomes Obstacle To Achieve Childhood Dream

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, Ore. -

More than 6,000 students walked to grab their diplomas Sunday at Portland State University. One of those students, Eddie Ramirez, thought he wouldn’t be able to attend college.

Ramirez came to the United States from Mexico when he was only a year old.

At the age of 8, he found out that he was an undocumented citizen. The eager student worried that he’d never get to attend college.

Due to the efforts of the Dream Act, Ramirez graduated from Portland State University and enrolled at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

“I got to orientation at Portland State and my mom in tears said we can't afford this, we have to look at other things. but now being able to be a commencement speaker today and representing other undocumented students and earning a spot on OHSU it's a blessing and something that was an obstacle at first but that's who I am," Ramirez said.

He is now on his way to achieving his childhood dream in becoming a dentist.
