Family Throws Surprise Party For Son With Rare Cystic Fibrosis

Posted: Updated:

ST. CROIX FALLS, Wis. (KMSP) -For one Wisconsin family, this Father's Day was all about a 12-year-old boy who has a rare disease and spent months hoping for one wish. On Sunday, he got just that.

Carson Waterworth is battling a rare form of cystic fibrosis, but the surprise he got on Sunday should help him keep his mind off the doctor visits and treatment for a while.

"To see your son be scared, afraid, and depressed is horrible as a parent," Leanne Waterworth said. "I want to take that away from him."

Fishing the St. Croix River is a Father's Day tradition for the family, and three generations of Waterworths participated this year while the homestead was secretly transformed. The party was put together to help Carson cope with a genetic illness that has no cure and may take his life in his 30s.

"We don't look at it as a diagnosis of death," Nathan Waterworth explained. "We look at it more as an opportunity. The things we would put off 'til tomorrow, we now do today."

His passion for being on the water and fishing is what keeps mind off the medical demands, which is why Carson Waterworth asked the Make A Wish Foundation for a new boat last February. Unfortunately, the foundation couldn't grant that request due to a policy prohibiting motor vehicles.

"He said to me in the car, 'Mom, is that wish stuff ever going to happen?" Leanne Waterworth recalled.

Recently, however, the board changed its policy, and that set off a chain of events that ended with the Waterworth men returning from a day of fishing to find a block party with a big surprise.

"For the outdoorsmen, it's kind of their hot rod," neighbor Steve Stenberg said.

Stenberg was part of the big reveal, pulling in a brand new Alumacraft Escape 165 to finally fulfill Carson Waterworth's wish on Father's Day -- and dad says that's the best gift of all.

"This is better than any tie I could have ever got," Nathan Waterworth said.
