Remembering Katie Cooper

Posted: Updated:
Almost like an emcee Father Mike Gilsenan walked around the main sanctuary at St. Paul the Apostle Church and asked people about Katie Cooper. This was a celebration of her life. Asked the Priest, "Did Katie have a tidy room?" Her roomate responded "note even close!"

Her mom, chuckling when given the microphone, said "Katie was a slob. (I'd) ask her to clean her room and the clothes went underneath the bed."

That was the spirit of this memorial service. To remember the 22-year-old old her friends and family called " Stupidly intelligent, gracefully clutzy, the coolest nerd ever and adorkable!"

Though, no one wanted to think about, it was mentioned during the service that she was one of 6 victims of a gunman in Isla Vista in May. Her uncle Steven Burgoon said "personally there is evil in the world. I've come to grips with that. That's the tragedy... evil exists. and in this tragedy we can find some positive things."

If there was a lump in the throat moment at the service it was when UCSB Chancellor Henry Yang presented Katie's parents the diploma she worked so hard to get. One can only imagine the thoughts, feelings and emotions of that.
