Family Says Swarm Of Bees Killed Three Dogs

Posted: Updated:

Katy,TX (KRIV)-The Manuel’s backyard has always been the perfect place for family gatherings and barbecues, but recently the unthinkable happened, leaving the family without three of their dogs.

“I noticed all these bees all over the patio,” says Cathy Manuel, owner of the three dogs.

Cathy quickly ran across the yard of her Texas home.

She adds, “I literally just went insane for a moment.”

Around the corner, she found one of her dogs dead.

The family says vicious honey bees with a mix of hybrid Africanized bees came out of a rock wall pillar and attacked the family’s dogs, Rocco, Gus and Koda.

“The german short haired I got on father’s day seven years ago, and the lab was my hunting dog. They lived in the house and where like my kids and they ate popcorn with us, and going to sleep at 10 o’clock,” said a tearful Bret Manuel.

Cathy says after finding Gus unresponsive she went looking for the other two dogs, bees were all over her body. Seconds later, she found Rocco lying motionless in his favorite hiding place.

She explains, “He was on his side and laying like this, I literally crawled in this flower bed.”

Beekeepers were out in the community accessing the issue on Tuesday, and say just in the backyard pillar, they found over 200,000 bees, and about 100 pounds of honey comb.

The Office of Emergency Management in Katy is concerned more swarms of bees might start appearing elsewhere so they’re taking action.

“We sent them off to Texas A&M for further testing because they charged the animals,” says Maria Galvez, from the City of Katy OEM.

Bret explains,“The next day the bees were back, so not only were they back on our fence, but they were two houses down in the family’s cable box, and inside another person’s house, two houses down.

A third cross now marks the place where the last dog, Koda, was found. Images Cathy will never forget.

“There were bees coming out of my dog’s mouth!” she says holding back tears.

Bee stings can be very dangerous, even more for humans.

“If you get bit by a bee and you notice anything changing with your breathing, then you need to seek immediate medical attention,” adds Galvez

Today, the Manuel’s backyard just wasn’t the same, the barking and running of their three beloved dogs was replaced with silence.
