VIDEO: Teen Strips Down At Graduation, Says It Was Not A Prank

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A North Carolina student caused quite a controversy when he stripped on stage during his high school graduation ceremony. He claims his stunt wasn’t a prank.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Quinton Murphy was walking across the stage when he turned toward the audience, pulled his robe over his head and posed with his arms out in the air. He was only wearing leopard-print briefs, socks and shoes when he took off his robe.

School officials were not amused. Superintendent Frank Till Jr recommended to Principal Denise Garison that the school withhold Murphy’s diploma and bar him from the school’s property and events, such as football games. Principal Garison agreed.

“Our schools have worked so hard,” Till said. “It used to be that the audience would be disruptive at graduation. We’ve worked hard to get the audiences to respect our students. This young man chose not to show respect for his colleagues.”

Murphy says the decision to drop his clothing was actually his way of protesting the plight of veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He says his uncle and grandfather, who are both veterans, were mistreated.

"Fayetteville does not have the best VA hospital. I have been there with my uncle and grandfather, and I've seen how poor things are, and like these are men that have served," Murphy said.

He now wants to apologize if anyone misinterpreted the on stage strip act and his family says they support him.

"You know it really touched my heart. He explained by me opening my robe I'm coming out of my shell the same way I want you to come out of your shell,” said Leonard Johnson, Quinton’s uncle.

"I'm sorry everyone. I deeply apologize if you guys took it the wrong way," Murphy said.

The teen is still considered a graduate and can prove it with transcripts.
