One Man Killed, Suspects Injured In Pursuit Crash

Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man was fatally wounded in a shooting in South L.A. today and three suspects in the case were injured when their minivan plowed into a light pole as they were being pursued by police officers, authorities said.

The gunshot victim, who was in his early to mid-20s, died at a hospital after being shot multiple times with a semi-automatic handgun, said Los Angeles police Detective Chris Barling, adding that the suspects are gang members who were hospitalized with minor injuries and who will be held in custody.

The suspects required treatment after their mini-van struck a light pole adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport, said LAPD Sgt. Carlos Bedolla said.

The shooting was reported in the 500 block of West 53rd streets around 1:50 a.m., Bedolla said. The victim was found near the Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church on 53rd, a news videographer reported from the scene.

Soon after the shooting, police officers began tailing the mini-van, then actively pursuing the suspects on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway, west on the Century (105) Freeway and then north on Sepulveda Boulevard, where the encounter with the light pole occurred, Bedolla said.

Southbound lanes of the 110 were shut down near the Manchester Boulevard offramp for a time as officers searched for the discarded firearm, Bedolla said. Northbound Sepulveda near Lincoln Boulevard remained closed early this morning.

It all started at 53rd St. and Figueroa in South Los Angeles.

Ironically, near a place of peace, a church.

That's where shortly before two o'clock this morning, police say a mini-van with three known gang members inside cruised up Figueroa, rolled down a window, pulled out a gun and began shooting. Just like that.

Their target? A man standing on the street near the church who was struck by so many bullets, he died two hours later.

An LAPD patrol car, that just happened to be nearby, heard the gunshots and saw the van speeding away. They followed and the pursuit was on.

As the van sped thru the streets and onto the freeways of LA, police say they saw someone toss a gun out the van's window. That was on the 110 freeway at Manchester. Police later found a gun there.

The pursuit came to a crashing end when the driver lost control and crashed into a light pole near LAX.

All three suspects complained they were hurt and were taken to the hospital.

Once released, police say they'll all be booked for murder.
