Special Olympics Team New Jersey is Heating Up

Posted: Updated:
Lawrenceville, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

On day four of the Special Olympics, the competition is fierce but that's not a problem for Team New Jersey. Several of our Garden State athletes are winning gold and silver medals!

Alyssa Sims, an athlete from Teaneck, is in first place for Team New Jersey in gymnastics. Her father is always cheering her on and couldn't be more proud!

"She's doing super great, amazing, absolutely amazing! She's having a lot of fun to," he said.

Team New Jersey is really excelling in every sport! In flag football they won silver, in unified soccer they won gold in a shoot-out 2-1, and in volleyball another gold metal.

Athletes also competed in the first ever triathlon in the history of the Special Olympics! The overall male and female finishers were both from Team New Jersey, Noah Dellas and Amy Noctor.

Having the Special Olympic 2014 U.S.A. Games in New Jersey also inspired the Garden State to pass a bill last week that would ensure that students with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in sports and physical education programs in all school districts.

The Games will continue through July 1, 2014 and everyone is encouraged to to cheer on Team New Jersey and show-off our Jersey Pride! Let's go athletes!

The Carousel at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey is a staple of the Jersey Shore, fully equipped with handcrafted animals and a Wurlitzer organ. Many people feel the carousel is a spinning work of art full of history. The carousel has survived the Seaside fire and Superstorm Sandy. Some residents think the carousel should be preserved, but others want to sell it.
