Glendale Brush Fire Interrupts Wedding Plans

Posted: Updated:

Well, what started out as a 'routine' brush fire turned out to be anything but routine. A trip to Brand Park in Glendale in mid-afternoon turned into quite the adventure. I noticed a couple of young ladies in beautiful crimson bridesmaids gowns, a little distressed on the street outside the park, as the helicopters dumped water overhead and the engines raced by. Turns out they were the sister and best friend of Aileen Orlino, who was to marry Vartan Dinkjian in just a few hours inside the park at a spectacular outdoor location called Friendship Garden.

The fire, the Fire Department, the Police, and the dangerous circumstances certainly put and end to that idea.

Not to be deterred, the ladies got on the phone, and with a big assist from Dave in the Glendale Parks Department, they were able to move the whole operation to Casa Adobe Park, just a couple of miles away. The wedding was delayed a bit, but when we got there after the ceremony it was all smiles and hugs and handshakes, even though Aileen told me, ''I just said forget it. It was a state of emergency all day long . I was going to call the whole thing off. "

Turns out she didn't need to, and everyone was happy. I don't think Vartan , who's moving here from D.C. to start a new life with his lovely bride, will ever have trouble remembering his anniversary.

It was a challenging holiday weekend for LA County Lifeguards, but the challenges may just be beginning. Just because Labor Day has come and gone, lifeguards say, that doesn't mean people are going to stay away from our beaches as a result.
