From Olga Ospina:

Farewell Collusus! After 36 years, the iconic wooden roller coaster at Magic Mountain is closing. When it debuted back in 1978, it was billed as the tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the world. Since then, fans  young and old, have packed the themepark to experience the one and only Colossus. Many coming back in these last few days for one final thrilling ride.

Colossus, with it's over 100 foot drops and speeds of up to 60 mph, will take its final ride on Saturday August 16. What happens after that? No word yet, but park official say Colossus fans will be excited with the big news to be announced on August 28. There is speculation Colossus will be remodeled to become a steel roller coaster, or perhaps some loops will  be added. We will soon find out!

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - It's last call for Colossus. The Southern California roller coaster that was the world's tallest and fastest when it opened in 1978 retires Saturday outside the top 10 in both categories. Six Flags Magic Mountain expects thousands of prospective riders on Colossus' last day, and a protest is planned by a group seeking to save the roller coaster. The mostly white wooden former giant is 125 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 62 mph. Six months after it debuted 36 years ago, a woman was ejected from her car and killed.

It's no longer even the biggest or fastest in its corner of the park. Goliath, a much bigger behemoth, now towers over Colossus.

Six Flags has not said what is planned in its place. After debuting in 1978, it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster. More than 50 million people have rode the 125-foot tall coaster, taking up over ten acres of land, with more than 4,325 feet of track.

Generations before you have cherished the long haul up this first hill and the great adventure waiting on the other side. The last day to ride this legendary classic is Saturday, August 16, 2014.
