LA Gal in NYC: Sex And The City

Posted: Updated:
New York City. I came, I saw, I conquered! In a quick vacation cross-country I was an L.A. (transplant) gal looking for a “Sex And The City” experience. Minus the sex (fiancé’ at home).

“Sex” fix

Are you more Miranda or Samantha? More Carrie or Charlotte? While heading to New York, my first injection of “Sex And The City” (from here on to be referred to as “SATC”) came while on the airplane itself. It you take a 10am-ish weekday flight out of L.A. you are sure to get back-to-back-to-back episodes of “the Carrie Bradshaw show” on E!.

MY "BIG" CELEB SIGHTING

I went to NYC for the opening of a play “Holler If You Hear Me” based on the lyrics of the late rapper Tupac Shakur (blog on that to come later.) To my delight, I got a true “SATC” sighting! There he was, in all of his “Big-ness”. “Big” himself! The actor who played Carrie’s longtime love interest, Chris Noth (I prefer to just know him as “Big”) slipped past the press line and into the theater. I gushed as if I were Carrie herself in the early days pre-SATC movie and marriage.

THE NY WAY

My trip was way too quick. I had one day to tackle the city of “Sex”. I power-walked as much of Manhattan as I could on a Friday afternoon/evening comparing everything in the Big Apple to the City of Angels. The pizza, the plays, the taxis, the (foot) traffic. I took it all in with camera in hand (blog on that to come too.)

LUNCH WITH THE GIRL(S)

Much like the ladies of “SATC” I grabbed lunch with a girlfriend. She’s now anchoring at Fox News Channel and based in Manhattan. We compared notes at a hip patio hotel restaurant. National news vs. local. Her apartment in a trendy part of town, my house in the hills. Her subway rides to work, my packed Prius complete with gym back, dry cleaning, earthquake kit. Yes, we also talked boys.

BLOG WALK

As I powered my way across a small swath of Manhattan I took in the sights and sounds. There was the bustling charm of Little Italy. The SOHO shopping. The crowd soaking in the sunshine at Union Square. The prime property on Park Place. I imagined the “SATC” ladies knew their city oh-so-well.

LOUBOUTINS, HONEY PLEASE!

I am, however, thoroughly confused by the Charlotte foot fetish episode and Carrie’s love of Christian Louboutin shoes. WHERE exactly does one wear heels in NYC? The cobblestone streets of the Meat Packing District turned trendy hotspot? The ten block walk from the theater to the after-party? I packed a pair of pumps but ended up wearing my walking shoes the whole trip and my ballet flats from Payless.

SHOP ‘TILL YOU… SHOP SOME MORE

The seduction to shop is everywhere in NYC. The Macy’s in Herald Square practically has a “come to mama” sign hanging on it. It bills itself as “the world's largest store”. As you stroll the streets there are pop-up shops with fashion finds that Carrie would surely crave. 21st Century is my close-to-Loehmanns fix. Then there are the teeny tiny doorways with someone ushering you upstairs to their almost secret shop. Of course, there are the six-foot plus models and the gigantic billboards in neon lights. Anyone remember the “modelizer” episode on “Sex And The City?"

GOODBYE NY

In a final moment, as I was almost back to my theater district hotel, I saw three young ladies heading out on this Friday night. They were trying to hail a cab. I watched. Would it be just like one of the “SATC” episodes? Would one of the gals whistle? Another stick her sexy leg out? I told them I was blogging about NYC (my own Carrie Bradshaw article) and asked if I could take their picture. I imagined I was their fourth friend. Was I Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte? Thinking I’ve been perhaps just a touch of each at some time in life (L.A. life.)

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
