Warehouse fire in Detroit forces major road closures

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A large fire at a warehouse complex on Detroit's west side sent huge plumes of smoke into the sky Friday evening.

The fire caused two major freeways to shut down.

Interstate-96 in both directions at the Southfield Freeway was closed until late Friday night. The Southfield Freeway in both directions at I-96 was also shut down earlier.

The warehouse is used by three different businesses. One of the businesses collects and houses donations.

A crew was making repairs to the roof when they noticed smoke and flames around 6 p.m. The crew was removing unused industrial equipment. Detroit Fire Chief John King suspects that could be the cause of the fire.

"It's a strong belief that them removing the rooftop units using grinders and torches, some embers might have fell down and caught the donations such as clothing and ... stuffed animals and stuff like that. That's probably what happened," he says.

No one has been hurt. About eight people were inside when the fire first began.

Another huge plume of smoke was seen around the east side Friday afternoon and evening. That particular fire was a controlled burn on Dickinson Island in lake St. Clair.
