Trash collector saves woman during route

Tampa, FL -

No two days are alike for Troy Mercer Jr.

That was never truer than on Wednesday, as he traveled his normal trash pickup route in Bradenton.

"I have my same scans I do everywhere," said Troy.

But something abnormal caught his eye- an elderly woman who appeared to be in distress outside her home.

"I parked my truck and walked to her and asked 'Are you ok? Do you need medical assistance,' and she didn't respond," he said.

It turns out she was having a stroke. Troy called 911 and didn't leave her side until paramedics arrived.

"I had to take her teeth out of her mouth. She could barely breathe," he described. "Something inside says you can't panic because if you panic, you're all she has for right now.”

Thanks to his quick thinking, paramedics say he may have helped save her life.

"We're all ecstatic about it. We all preach safety when we can help someone. Troy was cool, calm and collected, and we're proud of him," said Waste Management route manager Bob Serrano.

Troy says he's enjoying the attention around the workplace, but nothing compares to the praise he's getting from the woman he helped.

"She gave me a hug and a big kiss and she said, ‘I don’t know what you did sir, but whatever you did, you saved my life’,” explained Mercer.

“No problem; that's what I'm here for," he told her.
