Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

It’s really a shame that the real world is not paying attention to the U.S. Senate race because the two camps are passionately engaged in a war of news releases, we-thought—you-should-know email alerts to the media, and a never ending back and forth as they scratch for some advantage in this bitter battle to replace Carl Levin.
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Former Democratic candidate for governor Howard Wolpe took three days to blast his opponent, Gov. John Engler, for a prison break in Detroit that put hundreds of near by residents in harms way.

By the time he got around to it, the story was gone, the opportunity went too and everyone in town noted that Wolpe should have been there on day one.

His rapid response, which is critical in the political game, never materialized.

And then there is the current guy running for governor, Mark Schauer who some say has shown he's not about to pull a Wople on the rapid response front.

After the Detroit Free Press took a solid week to examine the charter school system, warts and all, the Democratic candidate for governor smartly responded with a laundry list of reforms.

It was a timely reaction that allowed the challenger to get into the news cycle on this story which is what they call free media in the biz. With a war chest that's on a Jenny Craig diet, he can use all the freebies he can get.

The week before there was another opportunity.

The papers were filled with reports that the Snyder administration had unknowingly allowed 3700 convicted felons to take care of grandma under a state program aimed at reducing the cost of in-home care.

The public health director conceded there should have been a criminal background check on these crooks and the Gov. Rick Snyder correctly chimed in with the buck stops with me.

To make matters worse labor said it had a check program in place but the governor and friends killed it according to the SEIU union.

The Schauer guys issued a written statement that got statewide media coverage, they "aggressively pushed the story on Facebook and Twitter" and then followed-up with an email to political reporters. The state party got into the act, too.

In a move they didn't make, they could have slapped a faux TV ad on YouTube berating the governor.  The pop from that would have added to the rapid response.

As for a rapid response from the Snyder camp? There was none.  The apparent hope was if you just ignore it, it  will go away.

Fat chance.  Look for a real TV commercial from the challenger on this one.  Not to do it, would leave the impression that he did pull a Wolpe.
