Quinn: ISP could deploy in Chicago if mayor asks

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) - Gov. Pat Quinn says he would be prepared to deploy state police to help address Chicago violence if Mayor Rahm Emanuel requests it.

Over the years Illinois State Police have assisted authorities in Chicago and East St. Louis fight street violence.

Quinn told reporters Tuesday after an unrelated event that he'll only do so if Emanuel asks and won't "impose anything" on any municipality.

Quinn's comments follow a deadly Fourth of July weekend in Chicago in which 15 people were killed.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has said his department's best efforts could not prevent the bloodshed that spiked dramatically on Sunday. Police say Chicago had more than 50 shooting incidents over the weekend.
