Santa Ana, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) Santa Ana police asked for the public's help today in tracking down a robber who took an iPhone from a 15-year-old girl who was fatally injured when she chased after the suspect's vehicle, jumped onto the trunk and fell off.

The victim, whose name was withheld, was walking with her 7-year-old sister about noon Thursday in the 1000 block of West Warner Avenue when the suspect grabbed her iPhone, pushed her down and ran to a vehicle nearby, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

As the car pulled away, the Saddleback High School sophomore jumped onto the trunk and held on for a short time before she slipped off, Bertagna said. She suffered head wounds and, by Saturday, was declared dead, Bertagna said.

The car was a light gray or silver Pontiac, Bertagna said.

The suspect was a Latino in his late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet 9 inches with a medium build, Bertagna said. He was wearing a black baseball hat, white tank top and light-colored jeans.

Anyone with more information was asked to call investigators at (714) 245-8390 or OC Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
