'Swatting' incident in West Bloomfield is not a game to police

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - On Tuesday, Police in West Bloomfield respond to a call from a man who says he shot his wife with AK-47 and set up explosives around his home. He calls again to say he took his neighbors hostage. It turns out it's a hoax and now police believe it's an example of "swatting."

"Swatting" is when someone tricks law enforcement into dispatching a massive police response as a result of a report of violence or an emergency at a specific location. The person then posts a video stream online as some kind of game.

In response to Tuesday's call, police set up a perimeter around the Foxpointe Condominium complex, only to find out the event was a hoax.

In 2012, Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill to increase the penalty for high-risk prank calling. A "swatter" can face felony charges and face prison sentences anywhere from 5 to 15 years in length. Parents of minors who do this can be fined thousands of dollars.

That's not a game or anything to joke about.
