'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes': Bringing apes to life

The genetically enhanced apes from the previous film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" inherit a post-apocalyptic San Francisco in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." And Andy Serkis reprises his role as top-chimp Caesar. Just as the apes have evolved, so has the technology that depicts them.Through performance capture, we've seen Serkis transform into iconic characters like King Kong and Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" series.

For fans of the original films this is the "Planet of the Apes" movie you've been waiting for. For every other theater-goer it's an unrelenting action spectacle that grips you visually and emotionally from minute one.

In the last "Planet of the Apes" film, a virus unleashed a super species of highly intelligent apes nearly wiping out humankind in the process and that's where we pick up 10 years later in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."

Actor Andy Serkis makes you sympathize with a virtual animal in a way you never thought was possible. He's also the actor that brought King Kong and Gollum to life.

"The Americans" star Keri Russell fights for the human resistance, alongside "The Dark Night" star Gary Oldman and "Zero Dark Thirty" actor Jason Clarke.

While they're all rock-solid performers, the apes are definitely more fun to watch, even if an animal riding another animal and firing a machine gun looks quite ridiculous.
