Mind Over Mulching: Dad Creates Remote-Control Lawn Mower

Posted: Updated:

Cutting the lawn is a lot of people's least favorite chore. But one Maryland man may have come up with a solution.

With a little know-how and some old-fashioned tinkering, he's built a remote-controlled lawn mower.

FOX's Tom Fitzgerald reports that it's turning yard work into fun.

Ever since he could remember, Anthony Stills was always building things.

"I was always taking the TVs apart, taking out the tube," he said.

But this might be his best invention yet.

Stills was a major in the Marines, but deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan took their toll on his knees when he cut the grass.

"It's always painful, you know? Going back and forth, that consumes all of my day," he said.

So, the Prince George's County man got an idea to build a radio-controlled lawn mower: "When I push the button, it moves. When I let it go, it stops."

Basically, it's a regular lawn mower mounted onto a cart Stills can run with his thumbs.

"My next-door neighbor said, 'Where'd you buy that from?' I was like, 'I made that!'"

His wife says it has cut his lawn-cutting time in half.

"I thought it was amazing," Eunice Stills said. "I still think it's amazing."

Now, the cost for this prototype came in at about $800. Stills thinks he can cut that in half when he finally goes into production.

The "Lawn Drone" has become such a curiosity that he has to be careful not to cut grass during rush hour.

"Every time I'm cutting the grass, I stop traffic," he said.

As for his kids, they're pretty proud of their dad's invention.

"I knew that in the end that it would work," said Evelyn Stills, his daughter.

"You don't have to do very much work," added his son, Anthony.

Asked what it looks like to him, Still's son Aaron said, "A robot!"

But there's a real human dad behind this grass-cutting machine, one who has put his mind over mulching.

"Now I can go and do all the things I really enjoy," he said. "Who enjoys really cutting the grass? "

Well, everybody would if they had one of these, Fitzgerald reported.
