SEPTA Police Find 3 Butcher Knives, 4 BB Guns On Passenger

Posted: Updated:

SEPTA police say an observant passenger, a cell phone and a brave detective helped catch an armed man.

It all started with a cell phone picture.

Police say a woman riding the Broad Street Line last night spotted a man with what appeared to be a gun in his pocket. She snapped a picture and sent it to police.

A detective was able to spot the man on surveillance video and chase him from the city hall station to LOVE Park.

SEPTA Police Detective Bryan Carney described what happened next: "I immediately started screaming 'Police! Show me your hands!' He twisted a couple times. I kept screaming, 'Show me your hands!' Eventually I just started screaming 'Lay down!' He twisted again. He was not really listening to my commands. At that time he started to get down but was still kind of hesitating. I saw my opportunity, I holstered up and jumped on his back."

"They teach you as a police officer to always assume that there's more than one weapon," Carney said. "In this case, the large looking Magnum was actually on the hip, which was what was pictured here. There was a knife next to that. On his left side he had the other firearm, next to it he also had another knife there, and then out of the backpack he had had the two other firearms and the meat cleaver."

The detective was able to arrest the man.

Police say they discovered BB guns and several knives on the 49-year-old.

They have not released his name, but they say he has been in trouble for this type of thing before. Charges are pending.
