Man Shares Amputation Journey Through Social Media

Posted: Updated:

A Virginia man facing amputation documents his last days with his foot. Although it sounds gruesome, he did it all in a celebration of life. The journey was shared online

Joseph Pleban has Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis, a rare joint disease that formed a series of benign tumors in his ankle. It caused tumors to continuously grow in his ankles so Pleban made a bold decision.

He decided to cut off his foot because, he was an extreme athlete doing so would allow him to continue enjoying the sports he loves without excruciating pain.

Pleban had tried his luck at swimming, snowboarding, wakeboarding, soccer, football and rugby over the years, but kept on injuring his left ankle.

Instead of mourning the loss of his foot, he wanted to detail his journey leading up to the amputation.

Even going so far as getting a tattoo that reads cut here at the amputation point.

The photo record started three months before surgery and included many adventures with friends many documented on a Facebook page, "The Last Adventures of Joe's Left Foot."

Pleban says losing his foot was emotional, but he's since then shared new photos after the surgery.

He goes for walks each day and plans to be fit for his first prosthetic in the next couple weeks! As you can see Pleban has a good sense a humor about this.

He says he's already planning his Halloween costume. He will be a surfer and his girlfriend will be a shark.
