TSA Agent Unaware District Of Columbia Is In The USA

Posted: Updated:
. - As a student in high school, I was always better at some subjects than others. Geography was always one of my better subjects. I wasn’t necessarily the best at it but I was fairly knowledgeable. I was especially good when it came to our 50 states and their capitals.  So imagine my surprise when I found out a TSA agent in Orlando had no idea that the District of Columbia is located in the United States. Yes, I’m referring to the same Washington, D.C. that has been the capital of this country since 1790.

Here’s what happened. An Orlando TV reporter based in Washington, D.C. was traveling back to the nation’s capital when he showed a TSA agent his District of Columbia-issued driver’s license. The agent told him his identification wasn’t valid and that the journalist needed to produce his passport. A stunned Justin Gray was eventually allowed through security, whereupon he promptly communicated his concerns about being detained to a TSA supervisor.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Last February, a TSA agent delayed a D.C. resident because the traveler couldn’t produce a proper “state-issued” ID. In response to Gray’s situation, the TSA says every Orlando agent is being shown a picture of a valid D.C. license to prevent a repeat of what is most assuredly a colossal embarrassment for the agency.

I realize there are a lot of people in the U.S. who know very little about the geography of the country in which they live. In fact, the results of a study done in 2010 showed if you know where the American Southwest is, you have a much better grasp on U.S. geography than most of the nation’s eighth graders and even many of those in high school. That being said, I don’t believe it’s too much to ask or expect that someone charged with the responsibility of airport security in this nation at least be aware that Washington, D.C. is not located in a foreign country.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
