Long Beach, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) One person was killed and a second seriously injured in a street race on Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach Monday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred in the 1100 block of West Ocean Boulevard around 10:10 p.m., Long Beach Fire Department public information officer Brian Fisk said.

Witnesses told firefighters at the scene that two vehicles had been racing immediately before the accident. The driver of one vehicle lost control for unknown reasons, Fisk said, ejecting both occupants.

One occupant was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the other was hospitalized with serious injuries, Fisk said.

Witnesses said the second car involved in the race left the scene.

From Bob DeCastro:

Long Beach Police say one man has been arrested, after fleeing the scene of a street racing accident that left one man dead and another critically hurt.

The accident happened around 10:10pm last night on Ocean Boulevard near Temple Avenue. The cars were traveling westbound on Ocean Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The driver of a yellow Honda lost control and slammed into a tree. Both occupants were ejected after the tremendous impact. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.

Ocean Boulevard was closed for several hours for the investigation. Neighbors heard the crash. Police say witnesses help track down the other driver at a residence in Long Beach. He was arrested and is being questioned. Neighbors say street races are common on this stretch of Ocean Boulevard.
