Lincoln Park firefighters help deliver baby in a car

Posted: Updated:
LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - With a baby on the way and no time to get to the hospital, an expecting mother turns to some local heroes to help her in her time in need.

No day is ever the same for Lincoln Park firefighter Dennis Gratopp.

"Sometimes they're car accidents, sometimes they're emergency runs or fires. We just went on a gas leak," says Lincoln Park firefighter Dennis Gratopp.

He's used to delivering help, but the need for help recently came to him last week.

"We get a lot of labor runs, people that are towards the end of their pregnancy, but we have time to make it to the hospital. This one is one of the rare ones that we didn't have time to make it to the hospital. She had it in the car," says Gratopp.

Gratopp and his firefighter friend Andy Emler were at the station on Cleophus Parkway when the aunt of a woman in severe labor pulled up. By the time the pair made it downstairs the baby was on board.

"All the hard work was done. Mom was very calm. We just had to clean the baby up. We had to suction the baby, and that just means clean the mucus out of the airway and also we had to cut the umbilical cord," says Gratopp.

The driveway delivery was the second for Gratopp and the 18th delivery for Emler. It quickly became the highlight of their shift.

"Anytime you can bring a life in the world and help somebody it makes you feel good. It gives satisfaction to the job," he says.

The new mom thanked the Lincoln Park firefighters via their Facebook page. On the post, she says she gave birth to a healthy 5 pound 13 ounce baby whose name is Aubree. Both mom and baby are apparently doing well.
