Gunman Sought After 2 Killed, Deputy Wounded In Shootout

Moreno Valley, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) Authorities in Riverside County are searching for a gunman who investigators say shot and killed two people and may be connected to the wounding of a deputy during a shootout. Deputy Armando Munoz says gunfire erupted Tuesday at a gas station in Moreno Valley, where a woman was killed while sitting in an SUV.

A short time later a man was found shot to death at a home several miles away.

Then a deputy responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call was shot during an exchange of gunfire. He was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities say the suspect was armed with semi-automatic rifles and may have been wearing body armor.

Capt. Joel Ontiveros, who serves as the city's police chief, said late Tuesday that investigators believe the incidents are connected, but gave no other details.

From Hal Eisner:

It has been a nightmare of a day for the family of 74-year old Wilma Patterson and 57-year old Derek Hardy. Randy Greene, of Los Angeles, says Patterson was a good woman who always tried to help others. So, it was almost impossible for him to say got shot with a high powered rifle. That doesn't make sense.

Patterson was Greene's mom. As he looked at the busted windows in her SUV from a hail of bullets he was at loss to understand who would murder her. All he can say, as tears start to fall from his eyes, is "it's not fair (gets emotional) it's not fair .. not fair... bottomline it's not fair."

And, what happened is not completely clear. The Riverside County Sheriffs Department is not putting out too much information. About mid-afternoon there were three huge crime scenes. One, in the area of the gas station. Another, in a residential neighborhood. There, Randy Green says his brother-in-law Derek Hardy was shot to death. He describes him as a "good man and a family man."

Greene and the family think Hardy was killed first, then Wilma Patterson, then it would appear that a Deputy was shot when confronting suspects.

But, for Randy Greene, there is just one bottom line. "My mom is sitting over there, dead - shot - for what reason is going to (haunt) me for the rest of my life. Where we go from here is another question."
