Suspect Dead In LAPD Officer Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:
Van Nuys, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A Los Angeles police officer-involved shooting has occurred in Van Nuys, news media outlets report. One suspect was killed in the shooting and investigators from the LAPD are at the scene. There has been no word on the condition of the officers involved..

The shooting occurred in the 6700 block of Hayvenhurst Avenue around 3:35 a.m.

From Gigi Graciette:

"I heard the shots. Bam, bam, bam, bam." Nikki Greene tells me. "And I'm like, here we go because there's just been so much going on in this area. Everyday it's something."

Today it was an officer involved shooting in Greene's Van Nuys neighborhood.

The suspect's body could be seen laying in the front yard of a home on the 6700 block of Hayvenhurst.

His hands still handcuffed behind his back.

Standard procedure, says the LAPD, because even though he had been shot by police in what was described as a violent confrontation, no one knew he was dead until paramedics arrived.

It was 3:30 in the morning and West Valley officers had been responding to a disturbance call.

Off-camera a witness told us he had seen and heard three men arguing loudly, kicking and vandalizing cars as they walked.

The gunfire, he said came later.

Meanwhile, the LAPD says they tried using less than lethal force to subdue the man when he began throwing rocks at them. It apparently didn't work but it's still unclear what led to the shooting.

That part of the story is still under investigation, they say.

The shooting will be investigated not only by the LAPD but also by the LA County District Attorney's Office.
