FBI joins the search for Armada teen's killer

Posted: Updated:
ARMADA, Mich. (WJBK) - The FBI has joined the investigation team searching for the killer of a 14-year-old Armada girl, April Millsap.

FBI agents went door-to-door Friday, canvassing the neighborhood near the Macomb Orchard Trail where April's body was found late Thursday night.

Armada Police Chief Howard Smith says April took the family dog for a walk on the trail around dinner time. Around 8:20 p.m. two people walking on the trail were led by April's dog to her body. Police say the dog stayed over April, wandering back and forth to the path, seemingly looking for help. Her body was 15 to 20 feet off the trail.

The trail is an old railroad line that is now a jogging, biking and walking trail that runs for miles.

On Friday, police said they're looking for a long gray van that has dents all over it. It was occupied by two white males. Police say the role of the van in the case hasn't been determined but it was known to be in the area of April's disappearance near Fulton and Depot roads.

Police now say they are also looking for a small motorcycle and a rider wearing a black helmet that was also seen in the area.

The Macomb County Medical Examiner is ruling homicide. Investigators are not saying how she was killed but do say she was not sexually assaulted, and was not shot or stabbed.

April was a student at Armada Middle School. Grief counseling will be set up at the school on Saturday, July 26 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. for staff and students. A candlelight vigil will be held at St. Mary Mystical Rose Catholic Church in Armada Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

If you were in the area in a similar type van or know someone who has that type of van, police are asking that citizens contact (877) 616-4677 or www.michigan.gov/michtip.
