Online traffic ticket payment problems

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta traffic tickets can be paid on line, but you better be careful. Weeks will go by and even months before your ticket data is processed to even allow you to make the online payment.

While you are waiting and searching, the officer already put your name in for court, usually 28 days after he stopped you in traffic. By waiting to pay online, you stand a good chance of missing your court date. When you don't show, court staff puts your name on a separate list as failure to appear, what's known as the "F-T-A."

That designation will hit you in the wallet for an extra hundred dollars on top of the ticket, and should you get stopped again, that second officer will pull up the F-T-A and you can be taken to jail.

City officials acknowledge a backlog in handling all the tickets with a fix in the works. It just may be simpler to go downtown and pay the ticket until the city can handle the technology.
