Tempe police uncover heroin operation after traffic stop

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe Police say they busted a heroin smuggling operation. Officers first discovered during a traffic stop Tuesday.  The whole thing happened near Southern & Price in a neighborhood just east of the intersection.

"We threw a flashbang in the backyard and one of the individuals came out with a gun and when he saw it was the police he immediately cooperated. He dropped the gun and was taken into custody," said Mike Pooley.

There were several people inside the home at the time, all of them called out for questioning and handcuffed.

"Our narcotics detectives were notified by some patrol officers that they had contacted some individuals that were involved in selling heroin, that led to the warrant this morning," he said.

The bust a big concern for cops and neighbors. Officers say they're seeing more heroin on the streets than usual.

"It doesn't matter where you're living, if you live in a nice community, if you don't live in a nice community, it's around you, it's around your children, and that's who it's really impacting right now," said Pooley.

Police say parents should talk with their kids about the dangers of drug use.
