Large Snake Has New Jersey Community On Edge

Posted: Updated:
VILLAS, N.J. -

A suspected python has a Cape May County neighborhood on edge tonight. Wildlife officials say a python is slithering the streets and its nearly 12-feet long.

"The tail was at one and it's head was at the other,” said Villas resident Becky Clements.

Clements was sunbathing in her backyard in the Villas when "something" caught her eye in the crepe myrtle tree, just feet away.

"The snake was coiled up the tree, its tail was hanging half way down, and it was eating a full-sized seagull," she described.

She soon realized this was no black garden snake. This was the real deal, a python right there under the patio table.

"It's the biggest I’ve seen, not the deadliest," said Villas resident Michael Clemets.

After killing a seagull the snake came back for more.

"It was thick it was constricting, and it just moved fast,” said Clemets.

The snake attacked a neighbor’s cat, and then tried to devour another snake that Clemets had to rescue.

"So far, we've saved a snake and a cat from it," said Clemets.

Now, some are worried about their small pets and children.

A week later, the unwelcome guest showed up in Judi Thompson’s backyard.

“The girth is like a football which scares me cause if the end is that big the mouth is twice it’s size,” said Thompson.

The python is now on the move.

Cape May County Wildlife officers have been searching for the snake that was most likely a pet someone had released into the wild.

Neighbors just hope it gets caught before it finds more food.

"I think someone let it go in the area. It’s not normal to see a snake like this in the area,” said Clements.
