Kitten Tests Positive For Rabies In Burlington County

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. -

A kitten tested positive for rabies, and now the Burlington County Health Department is urging anyone that handled the cat to be tested.

"I found it had a couple things wrong with its foot, and we were all holding it and everything," said resident David Wenger.

Wenger says his 11-year-old daughter, Sarah, and her friends found the cat they say the Burlington County Health Department is warning tested positive for rabies July 25.

"My daughter's best friend went yesterday to get shots, and now we both might have to go tomorrow to get shots, too," he said.

People who live in Medford Township in the areas of Eaves Mill Road, Route 541 and Route 70 are getting letters in the mail warning of possible exposure.

"I would certainly be concerned, but I do take precautions," said Ines Rice as she walked her dog Katie around the neighborhood.

The health department says 13 people, three cats and a dog have been exposed and are being treated.

Linda Devine has a dog and cat of her own.

"My cat comes out on a lead. It doesn't go loose. It gets on the swing and lays there all day long, so I don't know what's going to come up to my cat," said Devine.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Sarah is anxious about possibly being infected and having to get a shot.

"I hope not, but I'm going to get it to be safe," she said.

The Burlington County Health Department says anyone who may have been scratched or bitten by a stray animal or wildlife in the area within the past month should call them at 609-265-5531.
