Facebook Back Online After Morning Outage, LAPD 'Calms The Masses'

From Phil Shuman:

It couldn't be classified as a real emergency, yet some people actually called 911 to report Facebook was down! That's right, some 665 million users around the world weren't able to post pictures of their boyfriends, their breakfast, or their latest whitewater rafting adventure.

An internal glitch kept the network down for about 30 minutes this morning.  "Sorry'', the message read on the screen when you tried to log on, ''something went wrong we're working on it. '' Hey with all that information flowing through Zuckerberg's pipe, we can forgive the techies if occasionally things go down. We're in the real world, right ? The interesting thing would've been if the outage lasted a really long time, and then we could've talked about how people were managing to cope. As I mentioned, the LA County Sheriff's Department said it actually received 911 calls, the LAPD said it didn't get any but they both tweeted out this is not a law enforcement problem so don't ask.

I went by the LAPD and heard a great story about someone calling in, not about FB, but about the fact that Subway apparently put pickles on their sandwich and they didn't order pickles.  "That's a civil matter, ma'am, '' the Police told her.  Did that actually happen ? Sounds hard to believe but I believe it, just as I believe some people would actually call the Police about Facebook.  There are a lot of strange folks out there, I'm sure a lot of them are the 665 million daily users that have made Facebook a worldwide phenomenon in 10 years . As one actor I spoke with, while he was surfing the net on his phone at a cool downtown L.A. coffee house put it,  being without Facebook is ' kind of like being trapped in a  room with no air no light and no friends. ' Poetic.  Post that thought to Facebook perhaps

(FOX 11) Don't panic everyone...but Facebook was down for about an hour this morning. If you logged on, this is what you saw. A screen that says "sorry, something went wrong." no word as to why it went down...but never fear. Your Facebook itch can now be scratched.

According to a recent post on this by Mashable, Facebook.com began to recover at about 9:30 a.m., according to various tweets. Mashable claims they have been able to access Facebook, although the site's response time is often slower than normal. Here locally during that time, members of LAPD communications, who at the time were conducting a social media Q & A on Twitter were suddenly bombarded with questions about Facebook going offline.

LAPD Communications tweeted out during the brief social media crisis:

LAPD Communications @911LAPD: Pls. No questions about when #Facebook will be back up, we do not know... Thx! #LAPD

Representatives from Facebook have not officially made a statement about going offline at the time of this posting.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
