Immigration issue hits home in Farmington Hills

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Illegal immigration is an issue that seems to have much of the country at odds, spurring protests from coast to coast and even requests for immigration reform.

Now, that concern is really coming to a local level with talk of illegal immigrants headed to places like Vassar, Bay City - and now Farmington Hills.

The illegal immigrant children will be headed to Farmington Hills in the next couple weeks, likely before the end of the month. Wellspring Lutheran Services will provide their shelter, food and tutoring as needed and it will all be paid for with federal dollars.

"The politics of it, I know, we need to get sorted out. We know there are differences of opinions about those things, but this is an organization that for 120 years has served vulnerable populations and have done so without qualifying those populations," says Wellspring CEO Dave Gehm.

Wellspring's facility is on Nine Mile Road. Up to two dozen illegal immigrant children, males ages 14 to 16 years old, will be housed there.

"It is very likely that some of the kids, if not many of them, when they arrive here will really have maybe their first night in a real bed when they get here. And that's just something that really helps us remember who it is we're serving," says Gehm.

Right now, Gov. Rick Snyder estimates close to 100 undocumented children are in the state because of the crisis along the southern border.

The teens will be housed at the facility for 30 to 45 days. We are told whenever they leave campus they will be accompanied by an adult.
