Man admits to posing as female cab driver, withdrawing money from passengers' ATM cards

WASHINGTON -

A man who looked like a lady and stole over $200,000 while impersonating a cab driver admitted to it all in court on Monday.

Fifty-year-old Nyerere Mitchell of Clinton, Md., admitted to dressing as a woman, wearing a wig and padded bra, and acting as a taxi driver picking up passengers in D.C. who appeared intoxicated.

Mitchell drove around in his SUV scouting for easy prey. Prosecutors say he would talk riders into giving him their ATM cards and PIN numbers and driving up to the machines so he could get $10 to $40 to pay the fare. But instead, he took out hundreds of dollars.

He did the scam over three years, hitting up more than 60 victims and raking in about $225,000.

“I've had fun Friday and Saturday nights,” said Briena Strippoly.

She had her identity stolen unrelated to this case, but understands how frustrating this is for many people who trust a person you think is a cabbie.

“It was a long hard-fought battle,” said Strippoly.

But she hopes people won't stop trusting a cab driver, but will now be more alert in the backseat with money.

“I don't think that's a bad idea to begin with though that people do have a grasp,” said Strippoly. “They don't let themselves get so far out of hand that they can be taken advantage of.”

Mitchell's scam ended when police caught him on surveillance video.

He will be sentenced in October. He could get over 10 years in prison and has to pay back all of the money he took from his victims.
